High on Life's yapping alien guns were not to everyone's taste (we gave it a 40% Xbox Games Showcase still of course features big-mouthed firearms, the trailer focused much more on fancy skateboarding and fast shooting.
With the caveat that this looks more like a choreographed statement of intent than a proper gameplay reveal, it does look like a lot of fun to me.
High on Life 2 will be out this winter, and there's a Steam page up now.
If you need a refresher on developer Squanch Games' comedic style, High on Life 2's mature content description provides a decent shorthand analysis:
- Nudity
- Use of Drugs and Alcohol
- Crude Humor
- Blood and Gore
- Sexual Content
- Strong Language
- Violence
- Simulated Gambling
So, just about all the mature content things you can indicate, at least before pushing aside the curtain to Steam's adult games section.
Squanch is notable in part for being co-founded by Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland, who resigned from the studio in 2023 after felony charges from 2020 came to light (they were later dropped). Other serious allegations, which Roiland denied, were reported later that year.
Aspects of Roiland's signature style are still evident in High on Life 2, but I am curious to see whether its current talent roster takes it in new directions.
If you were following certain people on Twitter at a better time in the site's history, you may recognize the studio's narrative director, Alec Robbins, for his wonderfully absurd Mr Boop comics.
Although Squanch began with a VR focus, High on Life and High on Life 2 aren't VR games.
